Your Options After Getting a Citation in Marshall County

After a traffic stop in Marshall County, you have three basic choices. Pay the fine, which closes the case as a guilty plea. Contest the citation and go before a judge. Or, if the citation was for no insurance, submit proof of coverage and follow up with the court. Most people with routine violations choose to pay and be done with it. It is the quickest resolution for most minor cases.

Marshall County has no hearing officers. Contested citations go before a judge. Call the court and schedule a date before the 30-day window closes. Most traffic violations are petty misdemeanors under Minnesota Statute 169.89, with fines up to $300. Reckless driving under Minnesota Statute 169.13 is a misdemeanor, with fines up to $1,000 and up to 90 days in jail.

If you have questions about how the process works, call the statewide self-help line at (651) 435-6535, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Court staff can explain your options without giving legal advice.

Traffic Violations and Penalties

Minnesota traffic violations break into categories by how serious they are. Most common citations are petty misdemeanors with fines up to $300. Minnesota Statute 169.14 sets speed limits at 30 mph in urban areas, 55 mph on most roads, 65 mph on expressways, and 70 mph on rural interstates. Driving 100 mph or faster leads to an automatic 6-month license revocation in addition to any other penalty.

Texting while driving is a primary offense under Minnesota Statute 169.475. Officers can pull you over for it without needing another reason. Fines run about $135 to $140. Seat belt violations are a primary offense under Minnesota Statute 169.686. Reckless driving is a misdemeanor under Minnesota Statute 169.13 and carries up to $1,000 in fines and 90 days in jail.

Minnesota does not use a points system. The state tracks the number of convictions within set time windows. Four traffic convictions within 12 months triggers a 30-day license suspension. Five within 12 months means 90 days. Eight or more in 24 months leads to a 1-year revocation. To order a copy of your driving record, use form PS2502 through the DVS records request page. A non-certified copy costs $9.
