Paying Traffic Fines in Morrison County

Morrison County traffic fines can be paid online, by phone, by mail, or in person. The online payment portal is webpay.courts.state.mn.us. A $2.34 convenience fee applies to online and phone payments. Wait at least 7 days after the citation date before trying to pay online -- the ticket needs time to be entered into the court system first.

Phone payments can be made by calling (651) 281-3219 (metro) or (800) 657-3611 (toll-free). For mail, send a check or money order payable to the court to: Court Payment Center, P.O. Box 898, Willmar, MN 56201. Put your citation number on the check so the payment goes to the right case. In-person payments are accepted at the Little Falls courthouse during regular hours.

The 30-day deadline applies here as in all Minnesota counties. Pay or contact the court within 30 days of your citation date. Missing the window can trigger a default judgment. If your ticket was for no insurance, do not pay online. First submit proof of coverage to the court, then ask staff what to do next.

Contesting a Citation in Morrison County

If you want to fight a traffic ticket in Morrison County, call the courthouse at (320) 412-7010 and request a court date. There are no hearing officers in Morrison County, so contesting a citation means appearing before a judge. You need to take this step before the 30-day deadline passes.

Most traffic violations in Minnesota are petty misdemeanors. Under Minnesota Statute 169.89, a petty misdemeanor can result in a fine up to $300. Reckless driving is a misdemeanor under Minnesota Statute 169.13, which can bring fines up to $1,000 and up to 90 days in jail. That is a step up from a payable petty misdemeanor, so it is worth thinking carefully about how to respond if your ticket is for something serious.

Traffic Laws and Penalties in Minnesota

Minnesota groups traffic violations by severity. Most common citations -- speeding, failure to signal, following too close -- are petty misdemeanors with fines up to $300. Minnesota Statute 169.14 sets speed limits at 30 mph in urban areas, 55 mph on most roads, 65 mph on expressways, and 70 mph on rural interstates. Driving at 100 mph or more triggers an automatic 6-month license revocation.

Texting while driving is a primary offense under Minnesota Statute 169.475 -- officers can stop you for it alone. The fine is around $135-$140. Seat belt violations work the same way under Minnesota Statute 169.686.

Minnesota does not use a points system. Convictions are tracked by count instead. Four convictions in 12 months brings a 30-day suspension. Five in 12 months means 90 days. Eight or more in 24 months leads to a 1-year suspension. To get a copy of your driving record, the Department of Vehicle Services charges $9 for a non-certified copy. Use form PS2502 and submit it through the DVS records request page.
