It handles all traffic cases filed in Crow Wing County, from simple payable citations to contested hearings before a judge.

Crow Wing County is a busy lake-country destination. Highway 371, U.S. Highway 10, and several connecting roads bring heavy traffic year-round, with volume peaking during summer and fall. Traffic citations in the Brainerd Lakes area -- a hub for visitors -- are common during these seasons. All cases from any part of the county, whether from city streets or rural roads, are filed with the Brainerd courthouse.

There are no hearing officers in Crow Wing County. If you want to contest a traffic citation, you need to request a court date and appear before a district court judge. Searching Traffic Records in Crow Wing County

The Minnesota Courts Records Online system -- MCRO -- is the free statewide tool for looking up court case information. Search by name, case number, or citation number at publicaccess.courts.state.mn.us. This system covers Crow Wing County along with all other Minnesota counties.

A critical limitation applies. Pre-conviction traffic cases -- those not yet decided -- are not available through MCRO. If you received a citation and the case has not yet been resolved, you will not find it in the online system. For pending case information, call the Crow Wing County courthouse at (218) 824-1310 or visit in person. Post-conviction records are available online, and MCRO updates its data hourly during business hours.

In-person access is also available at the courthouse. Public access computers allow you to search court records on-site. Certified copies must be requested through the court clerk. MCRO is read-only and cannot be used to submit documents or pay fines.

Online payments go through webpay.courts.state.mn.us. A $2.34 convenience fee applies to online and phone payments. You must wait at least 7 days after your citation date before the online system will accept your payment.

By phone, call the Court Payment Center at (651) 281-3219 in the metro or (800) 657-3611 toll-free. To pay by mail, send a check or money order to: Court Payment Center, P.O. You have 30 days from your citation date to respond -- paying or notifying the court that you want to contest it. Missing the deadline can lead to a default judgment and additional consequences. If your citation was for no insurance, fax proof of coverage to 320-231-6507 first and follow up with the court before paying.

Traffic Violations and Penalties

Minnesota traffic violations are grouped by severity. Most common citations are petty misdemeanors with fines up to $300. Texting while driving is a primary offense under Minnesota Statute 169.475 -- officers can stop you for that alone. First-offense fines run around $135 to $140. Seat belt violations are also a primary offense under Minnesota Statute 169.686.

Minnesota does not use a points system. The state tracks how many convictions you get within set time windows. Four offenses within 12 months leads to a 30-day license suspension. Five within 12 months triggers 90 days. Eight or more within 24 months results in a 1-year suspension. Driving 100 mph or faster triggers an automatic 6-month revocation. If you need a copy of your driving record, the Department of Vehicle Services charges $9 for a non-certified copy. Request it using form PS2502 through the DVS records request page.
