Minnesota Courts Records Online (MCRO) is the state's free public system for searching court case data. You can search Lyon County traffic records by name, case number, or citation number at publicaccess.courts.state.mn.us. MCRO covers post-conviction records from all Minnesota counties and refreshes hourly during business hours. No login or account is needed.
Pre-conviction cases, meaning those still open and unresolved, do not appear in MCRO. If your citation is recent and the case has not been decided yet, you will not find it online. For pending case status, call the Lyon County courthouse at (507) 706-7050. Once a case closes, the record is available through the public system.
In-person record searches are available at the courthouse on public access terminals. Certified copies of records must be requested through the court clerk. MCRO does not accept documents or payments -- it is a read-only system.

Your Options After Getting a Citation in Lyon County
After a traffic stop in Lyon County, three choices are in front of you. Pay the fine, which closes the case as a guilty plea. Contest the citation and request a court date. Or submit proof of insurance if the ticket was for no coverage. Paying is the simplest route for routine violations where you do not plan to fight the charge. Most people choose this option and move on.
Lyon County has no hearing officers. Contested cases go before a judge. Call the court before the 30-day deadline to get a date on the schedule. Most traffic violations are petty misdemeanors under Minnesota Statute 169.89, with fines up to $300. Reckless driving under Minnesota Statute 169.13 is a misdemeanor with up to $1,000 in fines and 90 days in jail.
If you need to talk through your options, call the statewide self-help line at (651) 435-6535, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The staff there can explain the process but do not provide legal advice.

Traffic Violations and Penalties
Minnesota classifies traffic violations based on how serious they are. Most common citations are petty misdemeanors with a maximum fine of $300. Minnesota Statute 169.14 sets speed limits at 30 mph in urban districts, 55 mph on most roads, 65 mph on expressways, and 70 mph on rural interstates. Driving at 100 mph or faster causes an automatic 6-month license revocation on top of other penalties.
Texting while driving is a primary offense under Minnesota Statute 169.475. You can be pulled over for it alone. Fines run roughly $135 to $140. Seat belt violations are also primary offenses under Minnesota Statute 169.686. Reckless driving is treated as a misdemeanor under Minnesota Statute 169.13 and carries fines up to $1,000 and possible jail time up to 90 days.
Minnesota does not track traffic offenses through a points system. Instead, the state monitors how many convictions you rack up over time. Four within 12 months triggers a 30-day license suspension. Five in 12 months means 90 days. Eight or more in 24 months results in a 1-year revocation. You can request a non-certified driving record for $9 using form PS2502 through the DVS records request page.
