Pipestone County District Court

The Pipestone County District Court is part of the 5th Judicial District, which serves southwest Minnesota. The court processes all traffic cases filed in Pipestone County -- from routine payable citations to contested hearings before a judge. Court Administrator Natalie Reisch oversees administrative functions and can help direct questions to the right staff.

The court calendar is posted at 7:00 a.m. each business day and refreshed hourly. If your name appears on it, a hearing has been set. Cases that are confidential will not show up in the online calendar. Call the court if you are not sure whether your matter is confidential. Pipestone County does not have hearing officers, which means contested citations go straight to a judge rather than an informal review session first.

eCheck-in and Hearing eReminders are both available at Pipestone County. The eCheck-in option lets eligible parties check in for a hearing remotely, saving time at the courthouse. eReminders send you a notice before your scheduled date. Remote hearings may also be available for some case types -- ask court staff when you contact them about your matter.

One thing to keep in mind: the court does not accept payments after 2:30 p.m. on the last working day of any given period. Plan your in-person payment visit earlier in the day to be safe. Free surface lot and on-street parking are available near the courthouse in Pipestone.

Searching Traffic Records in Pipestone County

The Minnesota Courts Records Online system, or MCRO, is the free state tool for looking up court case data. You can search by name, citation number, or case number. It covers all Minnesota counties, including Pipestone. Start a search at publicaccess.courts.state.mn.us -- no login or account needed.

The main limit of MCRO is that pre-conviction cases are not included. If you received a citation and the case has not been resolved yet, you will not find it through MCRO. For pending case information, call the Pipestone County courthouse at (507) 690-7004 or come in during business hours. Once a case is decided, it enters the MCRO system and updates on an hourly schedule during business hours.

Public access terminals at the courthouse also let you search records in person. If you need certified copies, request them from the court clerk. MCRO is a read-only tool and does not accept filings or payments.

Paying Traffic Fines in Pipestone County

You can pay a Pipestone County traffic fine online, by phone, by mail, or in person. The online payment portal is at webpay.courts.state.mn.us. A $2.34 convenience fee applies to online and phone payments. Wait at least 7 days after your citation date before trying to pay online, as it takes time for tickets to appear in the system.

Phone payments go through the Court Payment Center at (651) 281-3219 or (800) 657-3611 toll-free. For mail payments, send a check or money order to: Court Payment Center, P.O. Box 898, Willmar, MN 56201. Write your citation number on the check. If paying in person, remember that the Pipestone courthouse does not accept payments after 2:30 p.m. on the last working day of any period, so come early if you are cutting it close to a deadline.

You have 30 days from the citation date to respond. That means either paying the fine or notifying the court that you want to contest it. If you miss the deadline, you risk a default judgment and other penalties. For citations involving no insurance, do not pay online -- fax proof of coverage to 320-231-6507 first and then call the court for guidance.

Your Options After Getting a Citation in Pipestone County

When you get a traffic ticket in Pipestone County, you have three main choices. You can pay the fine, which is treated as a guilty plea. You can contest the citation and request a hearing before a judge. Or, if the ticket involves no insurance, you can submit proof of coverage first and then work with the court on next steps.

Since Pipestone County has no hearing officers, there is no informal review step. Contested cases go directly to a judge. Get in touch with the court before your 30-day deadline to set a date. Remote hearings may be available for some matters -- ask when you call. Most traffic offenses in Minnesota are petty misdemeanors. Under Minnesota Statute 169.89, the fine for a petty misdemeanor can go up to $300. Reckless driving and similar serious offenses are misdemeanors or higher, with greater penalties.

The statewide self-help line at (651) 435-6535 is available Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Court staff can explain your options and the steps involved, though they cannot give legal advice or tell you what to do.

Traffic Violations and Penalties

Most traffic citations in Minnesota are petty misdemeanors, including speeding, failure to stop, and improper turns. Minnesota Statute 169.14 sets speed limits at 30 mph in urban areas, 55 mph on most roads, 65 mph on expressways, and 70 mph on rural interstates. Driving 100 mph or more leads to a mandatory 6-month license revocation on top of other penalties.

Texting while driving is a primary offense under Minnesota Statute 169.475 -- officers can stop you for it alone. Fines run around $135 to $140. Seat belt violations are also a primary offense under Minnesota Statute 169.686. Reckless driving under Minnesota Statute 169.13 is a misdemeanor that can bring fines up to $1,000 and up to 90 days in jail.

Minnesota does not use a points system. The state tracks the number of convictions. Four violations in 12 months triggers a 30-day license suspension. Five triggers 90 days. Eight or more in 24 months means a 1-year suspension. To get a copy of your driving record, visit the DVS records request page. A non-certified copy costs $9 and requires form PS2502.
