How to Search Itasca County Traffic Records

Minnesota Courts Records Online, known as MCRO, is the free public system for looking up traffic case information statewide. You can search by name, case number, or citation number. All post-conviction traffic cases in Itasca County are indexed there. Access it at publicaccess.courts.state.mn.us. The search is free and no account is needed.

There is a key limitation. Pre-conviction cases, meaning tickets that have not yet been decided, are not available through MCRO. If your case is still open, you will not find it in the online system. For pending case details, call the courthouse at (218) 327-2870 or visit in person. Post-conviction records update hourly during business hours. Results show charge type, case status, hearing dates, and outcomes.

If you need certified copies of court records, those must be requested through the court clerk. MCRO is a read-only tool. You cannot pay fines or file documents through it. Public access computers are available at the courthouse for on-site searching if you prefer not to use your own device.

Paying Traffic Fines in Itasca County

If you received a payable traffic citation in Itasca County, you can pay online, by phone, by mail, or in person. Online payments go through webpay.courts.state.mn.us. A $2.34 convenience fee applies to online and phone payments. You must wait at least 7 days after the citation date before the system will accept payment, because it takes time for the ticket to be entered into the court system.

To pay by phone, call the Court Payment Center at (651) 281-3219 (metro) or (800) 657-3611 (toll-free). To pay by mail, send a check or money order to: Court Payment Center, P.O. Box 898, Willmar, MN 56201. Write your citation number on the check or money order so the payment gets applied to the right case. Do not send cash. In-person payments are accepted at the Grand Rapids courthouse during business hours.

You have 30 days from the date on your citation to respond. That means either paying the fine or telling the court you want to contest it. If you miss the deadline, the court can enter a default judgment and take additional action. If your citation was for driving without insurance, do not pay online. Submit proof of insurance to the court first by fax at (320) 231-6507, then contact court staff about next steps.

Contesting a Citation in Itasca County

When you get a traffic citation in Itasca County, you have a few choices. You can pay the fine, which is a guilty plea. You can contest the citation and ask for a court date. Or, if the ticket was for no proof of insurance, you can submit documentation of coverage. Paying closes the case quickly for minor violations. If you want to fight the ticket, act before the 30-day deadline.

Reckless driving is a misdemeanor under Minnesota Statute 169.13 and can result in up to $1,000 in fines and 90 days in jail.

If you want to talk through your options, call the statewide self-help line at (651) 435-6535, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Court staff can walk you through the process. They cannot give legal advice, but they can explain what each option means for your case and what the next steps look like.

Traffic Violations and Penalties

Minnesota traffic violations are grouped by how serious they are. Most citations, including speeding, failure to stop, and improper turns, are petty misdemeanors with fines up to $300. Minnesota Statute 169.14 sets speed limits at 30 mph in urban areas, 55 mph on most rural roads, 65 mph on expressways, and 70 mph on rural interstates. Going 100 mph or faster results in an automatic 6-month license revocation.

Texting while driving is a primary offense under Minnesota Statute 169.475, meaning officers can stop you solely for that. The fine is around $135 to $140. Seat belt violations are also a primary offense under Minnesota Statute 169.686. Minnesota does not use a points system. Instead, the state tracks the number of convictions over time. Four convictions in 12 months brings a 30-day license suspension. Five in 12 months means 90 days. Eight or more in 24 months results in a 1-year suspension.

If you need a copy of your driving record, the Department of Vehicle Services charges $9 for a non-certified copy. Use form PS2502 and submit it through the DVS records request page. Traffic convictions from Itasca County are reported to DVS and appear on your official driving record. Dismissed charges do not appear on your driving record, though the court case will still show in MCRO as filed and dismissed.
