Hennepin County District Court

All traffic citations issued in Edina are processed through Hennepin County District Court. The main courthouse is the Hennepin County Government Center at 300 S 6th Street in downtown Minneapolis -- that is where contested hearings and formal court matters take place. Edina residents may also find the Ridgedale Regional Service Center in Minnetonka (12601 Ridgedale Drive) convenient for some court services. Call the court at (612) 348-6000 to confirm what the nearest service center handles before making the trip.

Hennepin County is one of the few counties in Minnesota with both a Violations Bureau and hearing officers for traffic matters. This is a significant advantage if you want to resolve your case informally. A hearing officer is not a judge -- they are court staff who review your citation in a one-on-one meeting. They can reduce a fine, set up a payment plan, or offer a continuance that may result in dismissal if you stay violation-free during the set period. Schedule a hearing officer appointment by calling (651) 281-3219.

If your citation involves a more serious offense, or if a hearing officer meeting does not resolve the case, it goes before a judge at the Government Center. For warrant issues related to a traffic case, call the Hennepin County Warrant Helpline at (612) 540-6485 to find out your options before things escalate.

Searching Edina Traffic Court Records

Minnesota Courts Records Online -- MCRO -- is the state's free public access system for court records. You can reach it at publicaccess.courts.state.mn.us. Edina cases fall under Hennepin County in the search system. You can search by name, case number, or citation number. The system shows party names, case type, current status, and docket entries for all post-conviction records.

Pre-conviction cases are not available through MCRO. If your Edina citation has not yet been resolved, it will not appear in the online search. For pending case status, call Hennepin County District Court at (612) 348-6000 or visit a court location during business hours. Court staff can look up open cases by citation number or name. Public access computers at the courthouse also allow on-site searching.

MCRO is read-only -- no payments or document submissions are possible through it. For certified copies of court records, contact the Hennepin County Court Administrator directly. The system updates hourly during business hours. Allow a day or two for a newly resolved case to show up in search results.

Paying Traffic Fines for Edina Citations

Edina traffic fines can be paid online, by phone, by mail, or in person. Online payments use the state portal at webpay.courts.state.mn.us. A $2.34 convenience fee applies to online and phone payments. Wait at least 7 days after your citation date before trying to pay -- the ticket needs to be entered into the court system first.

By phone, call the Court Payment Center at (651) 281-3219 or toll-free (800) 657-3611. Both lines handle traffic citation payments for all Minnesota counties. To pay by mail, send a check or money order to: Court Payment Center, P.O. Box 898, Willmar, MN 56201. Include your citation number on the check. For in-person payment, the Hennepin County Government Center in Minneapolis handles payments. The Ridgedale Regional Service Center in Minnetonka may also accept payments -- call first to confirm.

You have 30 days from the citation date to respond. Pay the fine or contact the court before the deadline. Letting it pass without action can result in a default judgment and possible consequences for your license. If your ticket was for no proof of insurance, fax proof of coverage to 320-231-6507 before paying, then follow up with court staff about next steps.

Contesting a Citation in Edina

Edina residents who want to dispute a traffic ticket can use Hennepin County's hearing officer process. This is the first step before any formal judge hearing. A hearing officer meets with you informally to review your citation. They can reduce the fine, set up a payment plan, or offer a continuance toward dismissal. Call (651) 281-3219 to schedule, or check the Violations Bureau and Hearing Office page for options. Make sure to act before your 30-day deadline expires.

Not every case will be resolved through a hearing officer. If your charge is serious -- reckless driving, a gross misdemeanor -- it goes before a judge. Petty misdemeanor violations carry fines up to $300 under Minnesota Statute 169.89. Reckless driving is a misdemeanor under Minnesota Statute 169.13, which can mean fines up to $1,000 and up to 90 days in jail. Knowing what type of violation you are dealing with helps you decide how to respond.

The statewide self-help line at (651) 435-6535 is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Staff can answer procedural questions about your case and explain what each option means. The traffic help page at mncourts.gov/help-topics/traffic-issues also walks through the full process in plain language.

Note: Hennepin County has hearing officers. Call (651) 281-3219 to schedule an informal review before your 30-day deadline. Warrant questions: (612) 540-6485.

Traffic Laws and Penalties in Minnesota

Minnesota sets speed limits under Minnesota Statute 169.14: 30 mph in urban areas, 55 mph on most roads, 65 mph on expressways, and 70 mph on rural interstates. Reaching 100 mph or above results in an automatic 6-month license revocation. Edina has a dense mix of residential streets and higher-speed corridors like Highway 62 where limits change frequently.

Texting while driving is a primary offense under Minnesota Statute 169.475 -- officers can stop you for it without any other violation. The fine is typically around $135 to $140. Seat belt violations are a primary offense under Minnesota Statute 169.686 for all vehicle occupants.

Minnesota tracks conviction counts rather than a point system. Four convictions in 12 months: 30-day suspension. Five in 12 months: 90 days. Eight or more in 24 months: 1-year suspension. To get your driving record, contact the DVS -- non-certified copies cost $9. Use the DVS records request page or form PS2502.
