How to Find Becker County Traffic Records
The main tool for searching traffic court records in Minnesota is the Minnesota Courts Records Online system, or MCRO. You can reach it at publicaccess.courts.state.mn.us. Searching is free and does not require you to create an account. You can look up cases by name, case number, or citation number. MCRO refreshes its data every hour during business hours, so recent court activity shows up fairly quickly.
One key limit: MCRO only shows post-conviction cases. If your case has not yet been resolved -- meaning you haven't paid, contested, or had the case dismissed -- it will not show up in an online search. For pending case status, you need to call the Becker County courthouse or stop in. The court clerk can tell you what is on file and what your next step should be.
If you need official records for court or legal purposes, you can request certified copies through the clerk's office in Detroit Lakes. MCRO is for informational searches only and does not provide certified documents.
Below is a screenshot of the MCRO search tool, which covers Becker County traffic cases along with all other Minnesota counties.
MCRO is a read-only system -- you cannot file documents or make payments through it.
Note: Pre-conviction cases are not listed in MCRO -- for pending citations in Becker County, call the court at (218) 846-5040.
Paying a Traffic Fine in Becker County
Becker County traffic fines can be paid through four methods. Online payment is available at webpay.courts.state.mn.us. There is a $2.34 convenience fee for online payments. You cannot pay online until at least 7 days after receiving your citation, because it takes time for the ticket to be entered into the statewide payment system.
Phone payments are accepted at (651) 281-3219 (metro line) or (800) 657-3611 (toll-free). The same $2.34 fee applies for phone payments. Mail payments should be sent to the Court Payment Center at P.O. Box 898, Willmar, MN 56201. Write your citation number clearly on the check or money order. In-person payments can be made at the Becker County Courthouse during regular business hours.
You have 30 days from your citation date to respond. If you do nothing within that window, a default judgment may be entered. If your citation was related to not having insurance, do not use the online payment system. Instead, fax proof of insurance to 320-231-6507 first and then follow up with the courthouse to clarify how to proceed.

Always save or print your payment confirmation when paying online or by phone.
Citation Options and Traffic Violations
After receiving a citation in Becker County, you have a few choices. You can pay the fine, which counts as a guilty plea and closes the case. You can contest the citation by calling the courthouse and requesting a court date. Or, if the citation was for no proof of insurance, you can submit proof first and potentially have the matter reduced or dismissed. The path you choose depends on your situation and the nature of the violation.
Most routine traffic citations are petty misdemeanors. Under Minnesota Statute 169.89, a petty misdemeanor traffic fine tops out at $300. More serious violations go higher. Minnesota Statute 169.13 makes reckless driving a misdemeanor, with penalties up to $1,000 and 90 days in jail. Gross misdemeanor traffic offenses can reach $3,000 and a year of incarceration.
Speeding in Minnesota is governed by Minnesota Statute 169.14, which sets urban limits at 30 mph, most roads at 55 mph, expressways at 65 mph, and rural interstates at 70 mph. Driving 100 mph or faster leads to an automatic 6-month license revocation. Texting while driving is a primary offense under Minnesota Statute 169.475, with a fine around $135 to $140. You can also be stopped for a seat belt violation alone, as that is a primary offense under Minnesota Statute 169.686.
Minnesota tracks convictions rather than points. Four convictions in any 12-month period brings a 30-day license suspension. Five convictions in 12 months means 90 days. Eight or more in 24 months results in a one-year suspension. If you need a copy of your driving history, the DVS charges $9 for a non-certified record, requested with form PS2502 via the DVS records request page.
